Graz versus Birmingham.SIR: I was intrigued to see the warm welcome for the Cook and Fournier Kunsthaus in Graz (December) and the outraged attack on the store in Birmingham by Future Systems (AR September 2003). They are somewhat alike: huge blob masses which have little relationship to their context. In Graz the new intrusion seems particularly difficult because of the fine scale of its surroundings. But there is surely a crucial difference: the Birmingham building is like a giant spotty spot·ty adj. spot·ti·er, spot·ti·est 1. Lacking consistency; uneven. 2. Having or marked with spots; spotted. spot slug, which slurps in visitors through tiny orifices. But (at least judging by your photograph), the Graz piece has a welcoming ground floor, an active edge against the street, which has a chance of really improving the life of the place.
