on ice in this year's Winter Olympics, don't be surprised to hear their clapping feet--thanks to new clap skates clap skate
n.
A speed skate that has a blade attached by a hinge at the heel, allowing one to skate more efficiently by keeping the full length of the blade on the ice while the heel is raised.
.

Engineers from Easton Sports developed new speed skates that let a skater lift the heel of the skate boot with each stroke. So the blade stays on ice longer than regular skates. Then the boot comes down with a clap. The new design forces the skater to use ankle, calf, and thigh muscles to push forward for more thrust and speed.

Could clap skates help break current speed-skate records? Definitely! Speed skater Chris Witty Christine ("Chris") Diane Witty (born June 23 1975 in West Allis, Wisconsin) is an American speed skater and racing cyclist and participated in the Olympic Games in both sports. However, she is more successful in skating.  used the new skates and became the first U.S. women's skater to break the two-minute mark. Check out the graph for speed-skating records in previous Winter Olympics.
