Borough of Manhattan Community College recently received $500,000 from J.P. Morgan Chase to transform a little used outdoor space into a glass-covered atrium housing a student lounge. The structure would enclose about 4,800 square feet of space adjoining an area next to what was the student cafeteria.

The Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education at SUNY Rockland Community College in Suffern, N.Y., has received more than $70,000 to offer training for healthcare providers at Good Samaritan and Helen Hayes Hospitals. The funding is part of a $1 million grant from the NYC Departments of Health and Labor to the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association Health Workforce Retraining Consortium.

The Pizzuti Companies have given Seminole Community College in Sanford, Fla., a 6.1-acre parcel donation valued at $1.5 million. The site will be developed by SCC into a unique high-tech training facility.

The San Jacinto College Aerospace Academy in Pasadena, Texas, has received an endowment of $25,000 from Barrios Technology, which gives the college use of Barrios' new Active iWeb software.

Gainesville College in Gainesville, Ga., was awarded a $634,100 grant from the Goizueta Foundation to establish and support the Office of Hispanic Outreach and Development by acting as a liaison between area schools and the college. Another $201,600 will provide scholarships to 18 students.

North Harris Montgomery Community College District in Houston was awarded a TIF grant for $405,542 from the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board. The grant will provide funding for computer labs.

Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio, will use a $35,394 grant from the Cleveland Foundation's Fenn Educational Fund to promote opportunities in manufacturing for students and employers and to develop the new Women in Science and Engineering networking group at the college.

Eight Arkansas colleges and universities will share federal grants totaling $3.1 million to boost educational opportunities for the disadvantaged. They include: North Arkansas Community College at Harrison, $527,579; Mississippi County Community College at Blytheville, $464,788; Rich Mountain Community College, Mena, $291,957; and Garland County Community College, Hot Springs, $244,292.
