A WIDOWED granny had her purse and cash stolen as she lay semi-concious in a Birmingham hospital bed.

Evalyn Upton fell victim to a thief after she was admitted to the serious infections ward at Heartlands Hospital suffering from pneumonia.

Tearful Mrs Upton, aged 59, said today: "I'm devastated dev·as·tate

1. To lay waste; destroy.

2. To overwhelm; confound; stun: was devastated by the rude remark.
."

Police are investigating and the hospital has apologised to Mrs Upton, from Chelmsley Wood Chelmsley Wood is a neighbourhood and large housing estate in the North of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, in the West Midlands area, with a population of approximately 40,000. It is located near Birmingham International Airport and the National Exhibition Centre. .

She went into hospital on Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  and said that before she was admitted to the ward nurses logged her belongings, which included pounds 40 in cash and credit cards.

She woke in the morning to find they had been stolen.

Speaking from her hospital bed, she said: "I needed the money because I had to pay it into the bank because otherwise I was going to get bank charges.

She said that a nurse had come over to apologise for the loss of her money but could not explain how it had been taken.

Her daughter, Angela James, aged 35, added: "It's disgraceful." Hospital director Lisa Dunn said: "We would like to apologise to Ms Upton and her family for any inconvenience caused. "We take the safety and security of all our patients and staff very seriously. Heartlands Hospital has a dedicated security team on site, with fully trained security officers regularly patrolling both inside and outside. "We are working very closely with the police to help them with their investigation of this matter."
