Grandma gets a gun.

In Jacksonville, Florida, a 64-year-old great-great-grandmother stopped a robbery by shooting the criminal.

On Thursday, April 14, a hooded robber carrying a handgun entered the Applegate Food Store where Janet Grammer was filling in for the regular clerk. The robber fired two shots into the back wall and yelled that he wanted money. Grammer, thinking that she would be killed, reached under the cash register, yanked out a pistol, and shot the unidentified robber in the chest. The shot, fired from point-blank range, knocked the robber down and made him drop his gun.

The robber then ran for the door as Grammer fired two more shots at him. Grammer told an Associated Press reporter, "I think he thought I was an old woman and would just give him the money. I think I scared the hell out of him."

Soon after the attempted robbery, a man who fit the description of the suspect checked himself into a medical center and told the doctors that he had shot himself. He faces robbery charges.

Grammer was familiar with firearms because she had been a security guard for 10 years. She said that she hopes the criminal doesn't die because she would feel sorry for his parents. Considering the fact that Grammer has 10 children of her own, along with 32 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, her sentiment is understandable.

The incident would have been the store's third robbery in two weeks if it hadn't been for Grammer.
