Informal Biotechnology. biotech Noun short for biotechnology Noun 1. company Caliper caliper Instrument that consists of two adjustable legs or jaws for measuring the dimensions of material parts. Spring calipers have an adjusting screw and nut; firm-joint calipers use friction at the joint to hold the legs unmoving. Technologies needed a fast, reliable network to serve 250 employees in its Mountain View, CA, office. Caliper also wanted to consolidate vendors to simplify its communications services management. Its telecom services manager, Doug Roberts, says he had two major considerations when looking at telecommunications providers--a stable fiber connection and a single monthly bill. Local incumbents could not provide the services needed, so Roberts turned to XO Communications XO Communications is a United States telecommunications firm and one of the largest Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) in the country. It is owned by XO Holdings, Inc OTCBB: XOHO. (formerly NEXTLINK Communications) and its fiber network. In addition to the fiber connection, the carrier provided local and long-distance calling, high-speed Internet See broadband. access and Web hosting Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith. among its services. The project faced one major hurdle--a direct fiber connection to Caliper's building would not be completed for several months, an option its customers, vendors and employees could not afford. XO, however, offered a fixed wireless solution for immediate broadband deployment, ensuring Caliper's connection through the metro fiber and long-haul networks without incurring additional installation or construction costs. "Our LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) A digital wireless transmission system that works in the 28 GHz range in the U.S. and 24-40 GHz overseas. It requires line of sight between transmitter and receiving antenna, which can be from one to four miles apart connection was up and running in three weeks," Roberts says, with long-distance service quickly added. The carrier also saved Caliper between $40,000 and $50,000 through bundled services. Because of the wireless link's quality, Caliper is considering maintaining it in combination with fiber. www.xo.com Circle 259 for more information from XO Communications [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] |
