TANDBERG, a global provider of videoconferencing solutions, today announced it has been chosen to provide 41 videoconferencing end-points to 26 sites within the Government of Victoria--a state in Australia--and its recently deployed IP network.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) is the first government organization in Victoria to take advantage of TANDBERG's collaborative communication solutions over the largest videoconferencing deployment based on Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) an enterprise-wide, standards-based network architecture that provides the intelligent network infrastructure for today's Internet business solutions.

"Due to the sheer size of our region, it was counter-productive to travel in order to have face to face meetings," said Andrew Paynter, project manager of DNRE. "For a one-hour meeting, some personnel, who do not have access to airports, would have to drive as much as six hours each way. TANDBERG's videoconferencing systems will now enable us to collaborate between departments, located in disparate areas of our organization, like we've never been able to in the past. As a result of this deployment, we can overcome the tyranny of distance, amount of travel and associated expenses, increase productivity and provide the support customers of our region expect from us."

The use of videoconferencing is part of the larger NREach-out project, an IP network that will connect more than 100 of the Department's sites throughout Victoria. The Government of Victoria is utilizing a Cisco IP Communications system, which combines voice, video and data on one network. This single network approach has now been widely deployed across a number of Victorian Departments under the Government's "Connecting Victoria" strategy. Productivity improvements from the NREach-out initiative have been estimated at up to $3.5 million a year.

As a member of the Cisco AVVID Partner Program, TANDBERG's solutions have been tested and verified by an independent third party testing facility to interoperate with Cisco networking technology and enable the DNRE to fulfill a vital part of its converged voice, video and data network strategy with a leader in videoconferencing end-point IP solutions.

In addition, this new IP network can support multipoint calls through the use of TANDBERG's embedded Mutipoint Control Unit (MCU) capability. This allows users to join up to four sites in the same videoconference using the high-bandwidth MultiSite(TF) function, which is embedded in all TANDBERG videoconferencing systems. For large group videoconferencing, users will take advantage of the interoperability between TANDBERG's end points and Cisco's IP/VC 3540 MCU. Meetings over video can be digitally recorded and distributed to remote sites for on-demand viewing though the use of Cisco's content delivery network (CDN) solution.
