Director General of the Ministry of Health Dr Ali Ahmad bin Shakar said the ministry Aa had Aa last week asked healthcare facilities at the primary and secondary healthcare levels to pre-define triage areas (based on severity of condition) before starting a clinical assessment.

Dubai Health Authority officials said a similar system had been adopted in all facilities under the authority more than a month ago. The authority has also arranged designated waiting areas for people with flu symptoms to prevent them from mixing with other patients and visitors in the general waiting area.

In the Emergency and Trauma Centre in Rashid Hospital, the largest government facility for H1N1 treatment in Dubai, patients are also given the latest guidelines on H1N1 symptoms and treatment.

Dr Viktor Mikhaeel Butrous at the trauma centre said this helped in cases where many people with mild symptoms could self-assess if the symptoms were linked to H1N1 or not, and also to realise the fact that not all patients need to undergo tests for H1N1.

He said suspected patients are also offered face masks to help prevent spread of infection from them. "Only those with severe symptoms need immediate attention and antiviral treatment and only those in the high-risk group need to C be admitted."

Due to the influx of patients presenting with flu symptoms, the hospital has also opened a new clinic exclusively for suspected H1N1cases. "This clinic works for 24 hours Adv. 1. for 24 hours - without stopping; "she worked around the clock"
