This release of the Gordano Messaging Suite (GMS) focuses strongly on the security and integrity of the messaging server. Unlike managed and appliance-based solutions that are only able to look for the presence of malware within incoming messages, GMS now ensures protection at all points of access to the messaging server. With this new release, messages are not only scanned when they arrive on the server, but also scanned when they are retrieved from the server, regardless if the client is using POP, IMAP or WebMail to retrieve the message. Messages appended to the server using IMAP are scanned, as are attachments appended in WebMail. This also extends into the Collaboration service as all attachments to calendar events, tasks, etc. are also scanned both on sending and retrieval. Scanning in the included HTTP Proxy server completes the all round protection.

Scanning messages as they are retrieved from the message store also extends anti-virus coverage across the danger period between the time a virus appears in the wild and when the updated virus definition file becomes available. "Even if a virus has somehow managed to make it into a user's mailbox prior to the new definitions being available, the fact that a second scan is performed on access to a message means that the threat is likely to be caught with this secondary scan," says John Stanners, Director of Gordano.

To complement the new security features outlined above and to strengthen the already considerable identity verification options within GMS, Gordano has also included support for Sender Policy Framework (SPF), the leading anti-forgery and sender authentication mechanism for SMTP message transmission.
