Goodyear is expanding by 7,500 square feet its Lawton, Okla., plant to accommodate new equipment for radial passenger tire production. The $8 million expansion will increase production by about 10%, according to Jerry Butcher, director of Goodyear's North American tire manufacturing. The latest expansion, the sixth one since the plant's opening in 1979, will boost production of Eagle high-performance tires.

A dip unit modernization project and expansion worth $5.3 million will bring state-of-the-art capabilities to Goodyear's Cartersville, GA fabric plant. About eight jobs will be added and construction is scheduled to begin in the fall. Completion is set for 1993. The Cartersville plant produces tire cord fabric and fabric for conveyor belting.

Shell Chemical has registered its intent to purchase Goodyear's polyester resins business for an undisclosed amount. The purchase includes Goodyear's polyester resin manufacturing facility in Point Pleasant, WV, its polyester technical center in Akron, OH and related assets. The transaction is subject to approvals by both companies and appropriate governmental agencies. The business' main product is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used to make beverage bottles, food containers and other thermoformed packaging. It also produces food-grade resins using recycled bottles to make new food containers. Goodyear will use the proceeds to further reduce its debt.
