Goody's Announces Fiscal 1997 Year-End Sales Results.


KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 1998--Goody's Family Clothing, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:GDYS) today reported sales for the fiscal month of January 1998 of $44.6 million, an increase of 23.5% over January 1997 sales of $36.1 million. Comparable store sales for January 1998 increased 11.3% over January 1997.

Sales for the fiscal fourth quarter ended January 31, 1998, increased 22.4% to $334.8 million from $273.5 million during the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the fourth quarter of 1997 increased 10.1% over the fourth quarter of 1996.

Sales for the fiscal year 1997, which ended January 31, 1998, increased 18.7% to $971.9 million from $819.1 million for the prior fiscal year. Comparable store sales for the fiscal year 1997 increased 8.2% over the fiscal year 1996.

Robert M. Goodfriend, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "We remain extremely pleased with the sales results for the fourth quarter and the fiscal year 1997, as well as our gross margins which remain higher than those achieved for the same periods in 1996. Inventories at the end of fiscal 1997 are well positioned as we enter fiscal 1998. As previously reported, the Company increased the level of spring season inventory to be in position to satisfy anticipated customer demand."
