Goodbye, Queen Mum. (International).


Queen Mother Elizabeth, England's beloved "Queen Mum," died March 30 at age 101.

Her husband, King George King George has referred to many kings throughout history. When used, by Americans, without further reference it most often means George III of the United Kingdom, against whom the Whigs of the American Revolution rebelled.  VI, became Britain's monarch in 1936. , were widely praised for staying in London during World War II. During the 1940 bombings, the royal couple toured London each day to offer comfort and encouragement. After their home, Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace (bŭk`ĭng-əm), residence of British sovereigns from 1837, in Westminster metropolitan borough, London, England, adjacent to St. James's Park. , was bombed, the Queen said that she felt closer to her people. The bombing, she said, "makes me feel that I can look [other bombing victims] in the face."

When King George died of cancer in 1952, the couple's older daughter became Britain's reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
