A federal appeals court has ruled that Roundup Ready soy seeds cannot be sold in the country until their maker, Monsanto, meets court-required demands. The Institute for Consumer Defense, a Sao Paulo-based advocacy group, says the ruling effectively blocks the arrival of other transgenic trans·ge·nic

The August decision came after Monsanto and the Brazilian government asked the court to overrule The refusal by a judge to sustain an objection set forth by an attorney during a trial, such as an objection to a particular question posed to a witness. But the appeals panel agreed with the lower court, saying that before Roundup Ready can go on sale, Monsanto must draft an environmental impact statement and the government must report on the safety of eating genetically altered products.

Monsanto says it will "work to meet the requirements of Brazilian authorities."

One emergency exception has been made to the ban: In July, 38 tons of gene-modified corn were imported from Argentina for use as livestock feed after a drought drought, abnormally long period of insufficient rainfall. Drought cannot be defined in terms of inches of rainfall or number of days without rain, since it is determined by such variable factors as the distribution in time and area of precipitation during and before  ravaged rav·age
