Gomersall, Chris. Photographing wild birds.Watson-Guptill, Amphoto. 160p. illus. bibliog. index. c2001. 0-8174-6416. $24.95. SA The author states early on, "the main ingredient
An ingredient is something that forms part of a mixture (in a general sense). for successes must surely be a passion for birds and nature." The sheer beauty of his photographs attests to both his success and his passion. His generous guidance, advice, and case studies will be of great interest to intermediate to advanced students of photography. The first chapter focuses in great detail on photographic equipment: cameras, lenses, films, tripods and other supports, digital equipment, and even backpacks. Most of the 200 + photographs in the book include detailed information on the exposures, lenses, film, and camera used as well as the goal of the shot. The second chapter, entitled en·ti·tle tr.v. en·ti·tled, en·ti·tling, en·ti·tles 1. To give a name or title to. 2. To furnish with a right or claim to something: "Controlling the Image," gives useful advice on composition, natural light, and electronic light. The next chapter on how and where to find birds in the field will appeal to birders as well as photographers. The case studies that follow illustrate a variety of subjects, methods, and field conditions that the author uses to illustrate the job of a nature photographer. The final chapter discusses processing, editing, storage, and conservation as well as organizing, presenting, and promoting a photographer's work. Interspersed throughout the book are interviews with professional bird photographers that highlight their special subjects and techniques. A helpful index and bibliography bibliography. The listing of books is of ancient origin. Lists of clay tablets have been found at Nineveh and elsewhere; the library at Alexandria had subject lists of its books. are included.
