Goldens' Foundry and Machine to open new facility to complement existing plant.

Goldens' Foundry Goldens' Foundry & Machine Co is a ductile iron and gray iron foundry with operations in Columbus, GA and Cordele, GA. It has operated continuously since 1882. Goldens' provides castings to a variety of industries, including agricultural, construction, power transmission, defense,  and Machine, Columbus, Ga., will open its new gray and ductile iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies.  facility by early May this year, according to according to

"Everybody's optimistic about that start date," said Tom Boyd

, vice president of sales and marketing. "We've only had the normal problems you have. It's kind of like building a house."

The company purchased Georgia Ductile, Cordele, Ga., last year and has nearly completed the process of converting the former vertically-parted molding plant to a high speed cope and drag In foundry work, the terms Cope and Drag refer to the upper and lower parts of a two-part casting flask, used in sand casting. The flask is a wood or metal frame, which contains the molding sand, providing support to the sand as the metal is poured into the mold.  green sand operation. The new line will have a 28 x 36 x 12 in. flask size and be capable of producing 120 molds per hour.

"I'm sure we'll start up slow, but the goal is to run the full 120 molds per hour," Boyd said.

The new plant, which will complement Goldens' existing 150,000-sq.-ft. facility, will run medium production gray and ductile jobs for a broad range of industries, including construction machinery and equipment, oil fields, power transmission, and pumps and pumping equipment. The cope and drag line is designed for medium-sized castings from 5-100 lbs.

The Columbus operation, which Goldens' will still operate at full capacity, runs a larger, 48 x 48-in. cope and drag line at 25 molds an hour. That line will continue to produce the company's larger pieces.

"Our facility in Columbus is rather old, so we're limited in what we can do," Boyd said.

The new facility will provide up to 18 tons of metal to its mold line per hour, significantly more than the 8 tons/hour at Goldens' existing shop. "It's a quantum leap for us," Boyd said.

The Columbus facility offers nobake and centrifugally cast components in addition to green sand. It also houses a power transmission division for pulleys and sheaves sheaves 1

"Initially we will send castings over to Columbus for machining, but we plan to have a machining facility in Cordele as well," Boyd said. "It could be up and running in the next three to six months." Boyd said that timeline will depend on customer demand.

Goldens', an ISO-certified metal caster that has been in existence since 1882, employs 225 in its Columbus facility and will bring in 100 more workers to outfit the new plant.

"The original plan was to put the new line in Columbus, but we knew this space was available," Boyd said.
