Not unlike the bizarre weather pattern, Benavides seems to have fought through tough challenges on all fronts since opening with partner Newmont Gold Co., Latin America's largest gold mine, Minera Yanacocha. The two companies recently won a four-year dispute with a French company when Peru's Supreme Court ruled in their favor over mining rights. While the legal wrangling continues, the Peruvian decision and strong results have been enough for investors to push Buenaventura's market value up more than three fold since 1993 to $921 million.
