Gold Quill Awards 2006: excellence. Innovation. Recognition. Challenge.

The IABC IABC International Association of Business Communicators
IABC Indo-Americans for Better Community
Gold Quill Awards presents the highest level of professional acknowledgment within business communication today. For more than 35 years, this international competition has tested the work of professional communicators, from strategists to tacticians, and recognizes the best of the best.

the best of the best

Throughout this section you'll find comments from our judges on what made some of this year's award winners "the best of the best." For a list of our judges, please see page 24.

About the judging

Entries are composed of two parts: the work plan and the work sample. They are judged on technical excellence, creativity and innovation, effectiveness in identifying and responding to an organization's or community's needs, the delivery of measurable outcomes, and the overall success of the project.

Judges score the above criteria on a scale of 1 to 7, which gives a weighted calculation for the criteria depending on the division. All entries that scored 5.35 and higher during the first-tier judging advance to second-tier judging. At the second tier, entries are judged by a different set of judges called the Blue Ribbon Panel. The majority of Blue Ribbon Panel judges have been recognized for excellence in business communication and meet as a group in San Francisco to select the winners. Any entry scoring between 5.25 and 5.74 receives a Gold Quill Award of Merit. Entries scoring 5.75 and above receive a Gold Quill Award of Excellence.

The Gold Quill Awards have three divisions:

Division 1: Communication Management includes projects, programs and campaigns defined by a communication strategy. Award winners have demonstrated the full range of planning and management skills--research, analysis, strategy, tactical implementation and evaluation.

Division 2: Communication Skills includes communication elements (publications, advertising, web sites, newsletters, etc.) that showcase technical skills such as editing, writing and design. Award winners have demonstrated strategic alignment, the creative process and measurable results.

Division 3: Communication Creative includes elements that showcase creative talent and design through an essentially communicative function. Award winners have demonstrated innovation, creativity, strategic alignment and effective graphics communication.

Originally, the potato is blank; however, it can be decorated with numerous attachable plastic parts to make a face, including a mustache, hat, nose and other features. History
Mr.
putting a face to their corporate social responsibility commitment, we could see each edition maturing and hitting its own stride.

The magazine tells stories using intriguing cartoon-style line art blended with photographs of employees. In addition to being fun and quirky, this approach would be a fabulous way to work around the nasty logistical issues of coordinating group photo shoots!

PSEG merger-related internal communications

This entry was innovative because PSEG's communication strategies emphasized the importance of treating employees with dignity and respect by maintaining "transparent" communications. Paul Rosengren effectively deployed a three-pronged communication approach that accounted for the human emotions resulting from uncertainty and stressful situations:

* Information communications: using all available resources to provide complete information about processes, status and plans to all employees.

* Interactive communications: using web forums, online surveys and videoconferences to provide information and obtain feedback.

* Personal communications: using face-to-face, one-on-one opportunities to clarify questions and concerns and collect feedback; and special communications to managers and supervisors.

PSEG's collaborative approach to its challenge demonstrated a commitment to doing what was right, and doing it well.

BAE Systems' reorganization and acquisition of United Defense

The work plan was succinct and well written, and covered the high points of entry. The supporting documents in the work sample provided an in-depth, chronological, step-by-step plan for effectively planning and announcing a simultaneous reorganization and acquisition. No detail was overlooked, no responsibility left hanging.

The post-announcement surveys of both attenders and presenters was also innovative.

The team successfully managed a multinational, face-to-face cascade approach to the announcement.

LORD employee induction event

This entry is an inspiring example of an incredibly strategic and business-focused launch of an employee brand. In the face of significant change, LORD Corp. embraced challenge as opportunity, with an event to help employees align their day-to-day accountabilities and actions with the LORD business strategy, brand and process.

Using a fresh approach, and factoring in business-based measurability from the start, LORD's communication team planned an event to unify and enlighten employees by "inducting" them all over again into the company culture and brand. The use of "workmats" got people working together actively in teams to understand their new internal brand: "We Are One: One Vision, One Voice, One Company." The results were riveting: Revenue went up, customer satisfaction increased, and employee morale and participation rose too.

Health Is Not Our Industry, It's Our Cause--Kaiser Permanente

This entry is visually stunning! It's fun to read and flip through, with lots of visual and design surprises. It conveys an important message in an unexpected, offbeat way. It also counters your expectations of an annual report. The cover text and design challenges you and makes you curious to look inside. Photos and design are just "out there" enough to generate interest but not enough to be off-putting or disruptive.

The Customer Experience: It's All About You!--Farm Credit Canada

This entry used extensive research to determine the current level of commitment of internal management audiences at Farm Credit Canada, and then used specific objectives to bring more audiences to the next level. The organization is currently doing very well, so there is no burning need for change. However, this entry supported management attempts to initiate cultural transformation, and it delivered with excellent results.

Meet Howie Dazzle: The 2004 TCF Holidazzle Parades

With more than a million lights, 2,250 costumed characters and 12 spectacular lighted floats, the annual TCF Holidazzle parades are held from late November through December in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as a means of attracting holiday shoppers downtown. The publicity program for the 13th annual series of parades developed creative and compelling story lines, generating substantial increases in local, regional and national media coverage compared to the previous year.

Special awards

All Gold Quill winners are considered for the IABC Research Foundation's Jake Wittmer Research Award and for the Business Issue Award.

The Jake Wittmer Research Award recognizes outstanding research commissioned or developed by an organizational communicator to effectively develop a successful communication program or project. This year's Jake Wittmer Research Award went to:

* Heritage Brand Campaign

Paul Mlodzik, ABC

The Co-operators

Guelph, Ontario

A leading Canadian insurance company, The Co-operators wished to revive its brand after a difficult few years for the whole industry. Its communication team devised a brand campaign based on extensive systematic research of the target audiences.

The research targeted employees, clients, potential clients, the general public and the media. It measured employee attitudes, brand awareness, advertising awareness and differentiation from competitors. The thoroughness of the research helped convince a skeptical management of the benefits of a brand advertising campaign. (For more on the Heritage Brand Campaign, see Case in Point on page 42.)

The Business Issue Award recognizes an entry that exemplifies the most outstanding work and strategic involvement on a critical, current business issue that poses a significant threat to the economic well-being and/or continued viability of the entrant's organization. The entry must present a clear, effective and innovative resolution with measurable results, and serve as a model for other communication projects focusing on this specific business issue. The 2006 Business Issue Award went to:

* Mars and Snickers Extortion Threat

David Hawkins

Socom Pty Ltd for Masterfoods

Melbourne, Australia

Masterfoods in Australia faced a sudden crisis when an extortionist published allegations that he had poisoned Mars and Snickers bars on sale in stores. The company had to withdraw 3 million products in 40,000 outlets. The Socom agency conducted a well-focused crisis communication program that helped contain the damage, and eventually led to a successful return of the products to sale.

The entry was outstanding in the rapid qualitative and quantitative research conducted among stakeholders. The campaign ensured the response was open, honest, rapid and flexible, with spokespeople constantly available to address continuing threats from the extortionist.

The outcome was clearly measured, with consumer research revealing that 92 percent of interviewees were confident again of the products' safety. Even more impressive, sales soared 250 percent in the first week that the bars were back on sale. This work helped avert a potentially colossal disaster.

Realizing the Vision: 2040 Regional Framework Plan

This entry turns an urban planning document into an entertaining and interactive program. It integrated useful and often complex information with very clever and surprising graphic and video elements.

There is a great use of video and animation within the context of civic planning and all its attendant facts and figures pertaining to land usage, demographic trends, etc. It almost has the impact of an entertaining video game as it invites you to explore neighborhoods, parkland, commercial areas and other urban spaces as they could potentially develop under this plan.

2006 Express Scripts Bonus Trax! Magazine--Nick Durutta, ABC, and Suzanne Salvo
