Gold Award-winninq MoneyWhys speaks quietly but authoritatively.

There were many reasons the Vanguard Group's Money Whys emerged heads above the other investment newsletters in this year's Newsletter Awards Competition--one of the most important being its information-richness combined with a warm, welcoming look. Money Whys contains a lot of informative reading, yet it doesn't present a "lot to read" image. This stems from a generous amount of white space and a restrained color palette Also called a "color lookup table," "lookup table," "index map," "color table" or "color map," it is a commonly used method for saving file space when creating 8-bit color images.  (black plus two colors), which contribute to an inviting, "read me" image.

Instead of the usually stingy stin·gy

2. Scanty or meager: a stingy meal; stingy with details about the past.
amount of background in nameplates, the MoneyWhys title appears against a broad field of a light graduated green. This "field of green" is reinforced by the white space to the left of the lead article with its "Plan your finances" headline, which is hung to the left of the article.

Color is also used to effectively layer information on each page. For example, the "Plan your finances--anytime" article on the front cover is set in green, to differentiate it from the "Time Travelers A time traveler (British English: time traveller) is a person who engages in time travel. The name "Time Traveler" (or "Traveller") may refer to any of the following:
  • The Time Traveller (character), the main character in The Time Machine, a novel by H.G.
" article. This technique is continued on inside pages, where color, typeface The design of a set of printed characters, such as Courier, Helvetica and Times Roman. The terms "typeface" and "font" are used interchangeably, but the typeface is the primary design, while the font is the particular implementation and variation of the typeface, such as bold or italics  choice and type style (i.e., bold) are used to separate adjacent articles.

MoneyWhys' excellent table of contents is discreetly placed at the lower left of the front page, set against a graduated light purple background. Article titles are set in bold, often accompanied by a few words set in light typeface that explain the significance of the article. Page numbers are reversed out of circles.

White space appears throughout MoneyWhys. Not only is each page introduced by a generous left-hand margin, but the column bottoms are scalloped-building white space into the bottom of each column.

In addition to using color and type with restraint, MoneyWhys uses graphics modestly. Most pages use just a single graphic, which can purely decorative--as on the first page--or an author's photo or a simple table.

All in all, MoneyWhys speaks quietly but with authority. Its only drawback is its 7 3/4 x 13" size. It's too tall to easily fit into a standard desk drawer or file cabinet. This can be a virtue, however: Since MoneyWhys is so good looking, recipients are likely to keep it on the top of their desk (or coffee table) until the next issue arrives. It's that good looking!
