Going to Heaven.

GOING TO HEAVEN

She went on her knees in the dirt
   thinking of nothing
   lost in the crumbling blackness
   kneeling above her shadow
   preparing a place for bulbs
and the few seeds held in the palm of her hand.

   Now gladiolus rises everywhere
   perfect in sunlight
spreading straight green wings into the air
and green curls in the shade
   that will be eaten.

And I have dug steps in the dark earth
that we may descend to them.
