Going bananas.
In 1926, sexy Josephine Baker turned heads by wearing only bananas
(see "They Did What?" Nov. 2006). Eighty-one years later, the
Black Pearl's erotic moves return in the form of a musical revue.
It traces the life of Baker-who's played by New Yorker Nicolle
Rochelle--and illuminates the history of black American music, following
its roots from Africa through Haiti to American jazz. Images of pre- and
post-Katrina New Orleans appear on a screen as a tribute to the city
that acts as the play's setting. Directed by Jerome Savary, Looking
for Josephine sold out shows in Paris at Opera-Comique in January. This
month the show premieres April 6 at Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre in New
Orleans. See www.lepetittheatre.com.
