Cobb uses the case of Mathew Shepard's gruesome murder as an entry point into an exploration of how right-wing zealots Zealots (zĕl`əts), Jewish faction traced back to the revolt of the Maccabees (2d cent. B.C.). The name was first recorded by the Jewish historian Josephus as a designation for the Jewish resistance fighters of the war of A.D. 66–73. such as Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist have co-opted religious sentiment to justify intolerance, hatred and violence against gay and lesbian people in America.
