God Hates Fags: The Rhetorics of Religious Violence Michael Cobb Michael Roy Cobb (b. March 16 1945)

Cobb represented the electorate of Parkes in the Australian House of Representatives from 1984 to 1998.

Before entering politics Cobb worked as a veterinary surgeon and ran a farm.

Cobb uses the case of Mathew Shepard's gruesome murder as an entry point into an exploration of how right-wing zealots Zealots (zĕl`əts), Jewish faction traced back to the revolt of the Maccabees (2d cent. B.C.). The name was first recorded by the Jewish historian Josephus as a designation for the Jewish resistance fighters of the war of A.D. 66–73.  such as Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist have co-opted religious sentiment to justify intolerance, hatred and violence against gay and lesbian people in America. In a unique analysis, he also shows that religious narratives have been central to queer expression and activism as a form of counter-protest against those who have sought to victimize and subjugate sub·ju·gate
