Afghan Telecom Corporation is the only basic telecom service provider in Afghanistan. It aims to provide superior connectivity solutions to the people of Afghanistan. Afghan Telecom has coverage in 144 cities, towns and districts of Afghanistan The provinces of Afghanistan are divided into districts ( Shahrestan).

The number of districts in Afghanistan has fluctuated over the years, with new districts created by splitting or merging parts of others. Prior to 1979, there were 325 districts.
