Globalization, governance and generational issues. In today's fast-paced world, there are three major areas that affect associations like MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) : globalization globalization Process by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. Factors that have contributed to globalization include increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation , governance Governance makes decisions that define expectations, grant power, or verify performance. It consists either of a separate process or of a specific part of management or leadership processes. Sometimes people set up a government to administer these processes and systems. and generational issues. In order to remain a strong, viable association, MTNA has to look beyond its borders for opportunities and partnerships, streamline its governance so it can respond quickly and utilize its volunteers effectively, and provide benefits and services for the different constituencies within our membership. MTNA has been involved in globalization over the past quarter of a century, often inviting guests from other music associations to attend our national conference. MTNA is partnering with the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations for an exciting joint 2007 conference in Toronto, Canada. MTNA Executive Director Gary Ingle in·gle n. 1. Both of these were extraordinary music events that broadened not only our personal horizons, but also communicated the importance of MTNA as the association for music teachers in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The potential for international relationships and partnerships with other countries or organizations is expanding rapidly. A second issue is that of governance. The MTNA Board of Directors is continually revisiting its identity and defining itself. In order to strengthen its relationship with state leaders through the divisions and hence to our membership, a new paradigm New Paradigm In the investing world, a totally new way of doing things that has a huge effect on business. Since one of the primary functions of the Board of Directors is to represent their constituencies, this more efficient structure utilizes the elected directors from the divisions in an expanded role. Prior to 2001, the immediate past presidents of the divisions automatically advanced to the board of directors. During the time from 2001 to the present, two important changes took place in regard to the responsibilities of the division officers: 1) the division competitions were removed from the division president and president-elect's job descriptions and 2) directors on the board were elected in a national election rather than advancing to the position automatically. The bylaws The rules and regulations enacted by an association or a corporation to provide a framework for its operation and management. Bylaws may specify the qualifications, rights, and liabilities of membership, and the powers, duties, and grounds for the dissolution of an proposal that the board will present to the membership will replace the existing division president and the division president-elect with a director and a director-elect. The director will serve as director on the board and as the director of the division. The director-elect will automatically become director of the division and director on the national board upon the conclusion of the term as director-elect. The board also approved an implementation plan for this change. This change will be brought to the membership for its approval at the annual meeting during the 2005 National Conference in Seattle. The last, but probably the most important, issue is that of the different generations within our society and the characteristics that define each of them. This is reflected in the changing demographics The attributes of people in a particular geographic area. Used for marketing purposes, population, ethnic origins, religion, spoken language, income and age range are examples of demographic data. of our membership. We can quickly see these different generations in our associations--from local to national--as we struggle to find volunteers at all levels and hear their ideas and concerns. At the recent MTNA Summit for Leadership, Gary Ingle spoke about Generational Issues and their implications for MTNA. There are four primary generations today: 1) Mature Adults or the Silent Generation born before 1946--they possess a strong sense of duty, tradition and loyalty and are the fastest growing age in the last decade. Key motivators are stability and security. 2) Baby Boomers See generation X. born between 1946-1964--they are self-absorbed, materialistic ma·te·ri·al·ism n. 1. Key motivators are respect and success. 3) Generation X born between 1965-1976--they tend to be nontraditional, interested in new concepts and products and have a global mindset mind·set or mind-set n. 1. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. 2. An inclination or a habit. . Key motivator is an enjoyable experience. 4) Generation Y born between 1977-1995--they tend to be materialistic and are huge consumers, often buying online. Key motivator has not been determined yet. As you can see, each of these generations has different characteristics, values, commitments and influences. This provides tremendous diversity and potential within the association and, at the same time, challenges the association to address the needs of each of these generations. With the advent of electronic communication--e-mail, e-bay, online purchasing and access to information--associations are rethinking how they provide meaningful services to their members. The MTNA board of directors will be considering the demographics of our membership very carefully in its decision-making process and in its volunteer structures so that MTNA can better serve its members--from the new Generation Y members, who are beginning teachers but whose interests reflect the new generation, to the Mature Adults who have a wealth of experience and knowledge about MTNA. In the world of today, "Change is a constant." MTNA has to be able to anticipate change rather than responding or reacting to change.
