This article details an analysis of the production of gray iron, ductile iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies.  and aluminum castings in Europe Europe (yr`əp), 6th largest continent, c.4,000,000 sq mi (10,360,000 sq km) including adjacent islands (1992 est. pop. 512,000,000).  and other major industrial regions to determine their effect on the world casting market place.

Western Europe--Automotive

In order to forecast casting markets in Europe, Stratecasts Inc. analyzed the production of cars and commercial vehicles in Western Europe and forecasts annual production by country to 2007.

Passenger car production in Western Europe is expected to increase at a rate of 1.6% per year from 15,282,000 vehicles produced in 2003 to 16,283,000 vehicles in 2007.

It is forecast that commercial vehicle production is to increase 5.0% annually from 2,421,000 vehicles in 2003 to 2,945,000 vehicles in 2007. The light truck production is expected to rise to 17% of the total light vehicles and reach 3.1 million vehicles by 2007. It should be noted that the "light truck" classification is not only included in the "commercial vehicle" group but also is a part in the "passenger car" classification.

Despite the forecasted growth in motor vehicle production, gray iron consumption in motor vehicles is forecasted to decline at a rate of 0.7% annually from 2.2 million tons in 2002 to 2.0 million in 2007 because of the continued conversion from iron to aluminum and plastics. Aluminum cylinder cylinder, in mathematics, surface generated by a line moving parallel to a given fixed line and continually intersecting a given fixed curve called the directrix; each line of the family of lines forming the cylinder is called a ruling, or generator.  head production is now more than 90% while the aluminum share of engine blocks is more than 50% and expected to grow to 70% by 2007.

Ductile iron is forecast to grow 1.4% per year despite some conversion in suspension castings to aluminum. The motor vehicle sector consumes a large amount of ductile iron in such applications as exhaust Exhaust may refer to:

Aluminum automotive castings made in Western Europe are approximately 70% of the total aluminum castings shipped and are expected to rise to 2.0 million tons in 2007, an increase of 300,000 tons over 2002.

Following is a look at casting production in each country.

Germany

The shipment of castings by German foundries is primarily dependent on the domestic automotive industry The automotive industry is the industry involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of motor vehicles. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide.  coupled with exports. German vehicle production declined to 5.14 million units in 2002 and increased to 5.5 million units in 2003. Production in 2004 is expected to be near 2003 levels followed by an increase in subsequent years, reaching 5.8 million vehicles in 2007. The weight of iron castings per vehicle is expected to drop. This factor, combined with lower exports, is expected to lower the shipments of both gray and ductile iron, as shown in Tables 2 and 4.

Aluminum casting shipments continue to grow with auto production and are forecast to rise to 768,000 tons in 2007, a growth of 100,000 tons over 2003.

Italy

Italy's economy slowed in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and is not expected to rise significantly until mid 2005. The GDP GDP (guanosine diphosphate): see guanine.  is forecast to rise in 2005 to 1.5% as unemployment drops to 9.1%.

The foundry industry has suffered in the past 20 years with the number of foundries dropping from 700 to 280. Gray iron casting shipments declined to 922,000 tons in 2003 and remained down in 2004 at 910,000 tons. A continued drop is expected in the next few years, stabilizing stabilizing,

increased to 445,000 tons, an all time high in 2003.

Aluminum casting shipments are forecast to grow to 840,000 tons in 2005 and to 880,000 tons annually by 2007. Ductile iron is to grow at an annual rate of 1.4% as the automotive industry recovers. The automotive sector is very protective and is primarily supplied by Italian made castings. However, the continued strength of the Euro is expected to keep domestic foundries non-competitive in the export picture.

France

After growing strongly in 2000, the French economy slowed in early 2001, and continued down in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Recovery signs are expected in 2005.

Gray iron casting shipments continue to drop and are forecast to decline to 1,035,000 tons in 2005 and to a low of 940,000 tons in 2007. Ductile iron shipments, spurred by the dominance of Pont-a-Mousson in the pipe market, is forecast to stabilize stabilize
