Global Crossing Puts IP Network in Hyperdrive; Global Crossing Uses Lucent Technologies' NX64000 Terabit Switch/Router to Become the First to Carry Commercial Traffic at OC-192 Speeds.


ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Nov. 2, 1999--Global Crossing Ltd. (Nasdaq: GBLX GBLX Global Crossing Ltd. (stock symbol) ), which is building and operating the world's most advanced global IP-based fiber optic network, today announced that it has completed the first phase of an IP over OC-192 field trial using Lucent's Multi-Terabit Switch/Routers. Global Crossing is the first carrier to deploy IP over OC-192 in a real-world environment, passing production IP traffic on an optical transmission network at 10 Gbps (gigabits per second). Customers will benefit from an IP network that is four times faster than anything available today, with an ability to scale instantaneously to meet changing demand. Lucent's revolutionary NX64000 is the first switch/router to support an industry-leading OC-192 standard rate interface of 10 gigabits per second. The NX64000 delivers the highest switch capacity per chassis at 6.4 terabits - 100 times the capacity of today's commercially available switch/routers, along with the highest port densities and the lowest latency. As network reliability is critical to service providers, this carrier class switch/router offers full redundancy, hardware hot-swap, rapid restoration at both SONET and higher layers and is the only terabit switch/router to support in-service software upgrades. The NX64000 switch/router is expected to be commercially available by end of the year.
