Glider-watching over the peninsula's Windy Hill preserve.

Greened now by winter rains, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve slouches against Skyline Ridge, its face swept by warm inland thermals while cold ocean air creeps up its back. The swirling results make for excellent kite and model sailplane flying, and its treeless slope offers few obstacles.

When prevailing winds of 10 to 30 miles per hour blow from either the east or west, you're likely to find members of the South Bay Soaring Society here--particularly on a Sunday--as they launch and maneuver their radio-controlled engineless craft (no motorized model airplanes are allowed).

Dipping and swooping overhead, these graceful gliders may look small, but they can have a wingspan of 4 to 12 feet. For information on activities, write to the society, Box 2012, Sunnyvale, Calif. 94087.

The 697-acre preserve now offers more hiking possibilities. You can try the newly opened Eagle Trail along Corte Madera Creek, part of the 8-mile Windy Hill loop. From the 1,900-foot top of Windy Hill, the densely built Peninsula spreads out below you; views stretch east as far as Mount Diablo.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District preserve is open, free, during daylight. It's about 30 miles south of San Francisco. From I-280, take Woodside Road (State 84) southwest to Skyline Boulevard, then go 2 miles south to the parking lot.
