Glenayre To Equip Morocco with Its First Paging System; New Paging Network Will Serve Country's Major Cities.


CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 1996--Glenayre Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS) has received a contract letter of intent from the government-run telecommunications company See telecom company.  in Morocco to provide $2.6 million worth of infrastructure equipment and installation services from Glenayre for a new paging system capable of supporting all high-speed paging protocols that now exist.

L'Office National des Postes et Telecommunications (ONPT) of Morocco purchased a GL3000 Paging Terminal, 60 C-2000 Controllers, 60 GL-T5310 125-Watt Transmitters and a GL3900 Alphanumeric Entry System.

The new paging network will initially serve 50,000 subscribers in the Moroccan cities of Rabat Rabat (räbät`), city (1994 pop. 787,745), capital of Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Bou Regreg estuary, opposite Salé. , Casablanca, Tangiers, Marrakech, Agadir, Tetouan, Fes and La'youne. Main highways and roadways connecting the cities will be part of the network. The system is expected to be operational in about 14 months.

ERMES is the standard adopted by many countries in neighboring Europe whose subscribers will have roaming capabilities--the ability to receive pages in any country that has an ERMES-based network. Glenayre has supplied equipment for ERMES systems in France and Hungary, the first commercial systems on the continent.
