Glass: Rob Gregory reviews new developments and applications of glass technology.

500 GARTNER/ZADRA GLASS

Gartner, the German market leader in facade construction, has recently completed the installation of more than 16 000sqm of glass, aluminium, steel, sheet metal and natural stone at New York's recently opened Museum of Modern Art (MoMA, p40). The building cover consists of 22 different types of facade which, as described by architect Yoshio Taniguchi Yoshio Taniguchi (谷口吉生, Taniguchi Yoshio; born 1937) is a Japanese architect best known for his redesign of the Museum of Modern Art in New York which was reopened November 20, 2004. , will reflect the artistic claims of the Museum. The facade had to be designed generally with a joint width of just 6mm. Gartner therefore produced the facade elements in Gundelfingen using CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) See numerical control.

501 INTERPANE

In response to differing international markets, Interpane presents new solar control glazing with an extremely low solar factor but increased external reflection and interesting colouring. Neutral or tinted glazing, complemented by matching spandrel spandrel

panels, provide a harmonic facade. Interpane's Ipasol Bright was developed for use in regions with a lot of sunshine. With the additional iplus S thermal insulation The term thermal insulation can refer to materials used to reduce the rate of heat transfer, or the methods and processes used to reduce heat transfer.

Heat is transferred from one material to another by conduction, convection and/or radiation.
coating, the glazing also meets central and northern European demands, as shown here in a modern extension to a manor house.

502 SAINT GOBAIN-ECKELT

STADIP ARTE is a laminated safety glass, which can have complex visual images applied--from brush strokes Brush Strokes was an Esmonde and Larbey sitcom set in South London and depicting the (mostly) amorous adventures of a good-looking, wisecracking house painter, Jacko (Karl Howman).  to photo-realistic images, graphic data to colour-graduations. 503 PILKINGTON

Pilkington Activ coated glass was the world's first self-cleaning glass Self-cleaning glass is a new technology for glass production that allows glass to self-clean. The process is two step: Firstly, UV rays in sunlight break down organic dirt which is on the glass and makes the glass surface become 'hydrophilic'. . A microscopically thin transparent coating of titanium oxide has two important chemical properties which, when combined, make the glass 'self cleaning'. The surface coating is photocatalytic; ultra-violet (UV) radiation causes it to react chemically with unwanted deposits of organic dirt, oxidizing them and breaking their adherence to the surface of the glass. It is also Hydrophilic--meaning it attracts water and causes it to 'sheet' on the surface of the glass, preventing the formation of separate droplets and ensuring that loose particles of dust and dirt can be washed naturally from the surface during normal rainy weather. As this chemical activity is continuous, even heavy soiling will eventually be broken down sufficiently to wash naturally off the glass during showers of rain. Regular cleaning should not normally be necessary.

504 GLAVERBEL

The outer skin of Ulm's new central library incorporates Glaverbel glass. The accessible double facade design acts as a useful climatic buffer, with large ventilation flaps and a moveable sunshade between the two skins of the facade which prevent the building from overheating Overheating

As well as cooling the structural components with night air to avoid excessive cooling loads, the coating of Glaverbel's Sunergy solar control glass, combined with the outer layer of patterned glass, allows only a small amount of solar radiation solar radiation,

505 SCHOTT

In completing Salzburg Airport's new Hangar 7, the contract for specially produced fire-resistant glass went to the Special Float Glass Division of SCHOTT JENAer Glas GmbH. PYRANS borosilicate bo·ro·sil·i·cate

Noun 1.
fire-resistant glass at Hangar 7 is opening up a new dimension of transparent architecture in a format previously unattained in frameless glazing: the fire-resistant glass separates the two fire-protection compartments over a floor height of up to 3.40m. It is supported without intrusive vertical profiles from floor to ceiling. Instead the required supports are 'concealed' within the floor and ceiling. Some adaptation of the production had to be carried out both for the manufacture of the basic glass and also for the toughening and laminating.
