Claire Christiansen sank a three-pointer with 3:46 left to bring the Spartans within 46-42, but that's as close as they would get.

"I think the (foul situation) was more to our advantage," Gladstone coach Jere Applebee said. "Part of that was our aggressiveness. We got going faster than they wanted."

The team's combined for 42 personal fouls, one shy of the girls tournament record set in 1977. Marist's totals included 26 fouls, including one flagrant foul A flagrant foul is a serious contact foul involving unnecessary and/or excessive and/or intentional contact in sport. Jessie Jones had 15 points - going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line - and Terry had 11 for Gladstone.

"We haven't said a word about this favorites stuff," Applebee said. "All year it's been our goal to play on Saturday."

Marist returns today for a 10:45 a.m. consolation game against No. 4 Scappoose. In making their 30th consecutive appearance to the state tournament, DePaoli said the Spartans have won at least one game 28 times.

It's a streak he'd like to keep intact.

"It's 12 hours of pain, then we have to get back and just play," he said.

"Defense is going to set the tone (today), and nobody shoots well typically before noon."
