IN his conference speech Gordon Brown announced a package of constitutional reforms including holding a referendum on whether to replace the first past the post voting system with the Alternative Vote (AV) . While AV would give voters more choice, it is not proportional.

Promising a referendum after the general election is meaningless, why would anyone, other than the Lib Dems, be so stupid to trust Labour ? Remember when Labour promised this in 1997? What happened? Nothing!

At our annual assembly Liberal Party members voted to campaign for a referendum on proportional representation proportional representation: see representation.

The British people should be able to decide on the merits on the merits adj. referring to a judgment, decision or ruling of a court based upon the facts presented in evidence and the law applied to that evidence.
