Give the gift of car security this year.

With Christmas upon us, for the next two weeks at Tools of the Trade we thought we would give you some good motoring gift ideas.

This week we've decided to look at things to help to ensure that your friends' and family's vehicles stay safe.

More than a quarter of all recorded crime is car crime. Security devices go a long way to deter thieves, but knowing what to buy, and how much to spend, can be extremely confusing.

The device everyone is familiar with, and it's arguably ar·gu·a·ble

When choosing an alarm installer it's advisable to shop around and look for Vehicle Security Installation Board certification. After the system has been fitted, ask the technician to show you how it works.

Another option is to fit an immobiliser. These interrupt the car's ignition when an incorrect key, or no key at all, is used. This means that a thief can't start the engine.

The newest security device on the market is the tracking system. These are expensive, but very effective. On some models there is also a monthly subscription charge. Services vary between companies, but features available include mapping services and a call-up of the vehicle's exact location if it is stolen.

A cheap method to deter a thief is a flashing LED light. A warning light identifies a vehicle with an armed alarm system. At a glance, the thief doesn't know that the light is false and may decide not to take the risk.

Another cheap deterrent is a steering wheel lock. These are very popular and are designed to stop the steering wheel being turned.

NNext week we'll tell you how to get your hands on the perfect car-lover's gift - a personalised Adj. 1. personalised - made for or directed or adjusted to a particular individual; "personalized luggage"; "personalized advice"
