New color masterbatches give a frosted-glass look to PET bottles for cosmetics, alcoholic beverages

. Developed by Ampacet Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y., 603121-PT and 603122-PT masterbatches also can be used in thermoformed containers. Ampacet estimates that plastic bottles with a moldedin frosted look cost at least 90% less than bottles with the frost spray-painted on. And because the color is distributed throughout the wall, it cannot be scraped off.

Grade 603121, which requires more stretch to activate its light-diffusion properties, provides a whiter frosted effect, whereas 603122 provides a more neutral gray effect. Bottles' appearance can range from translucent to opaque. Intensity of the frosted effect depends on the letdown letdown
