Give Yimou a break! (Letters to the Editor).

I am disappointed that your review and commentary of Zhang Yimou's new movie Hero left out some important information about Yimou ("Chinese Omens," February 24th issue). In the past, he has been punished by the Chinese Communist government for the content of his movies, especially for To Live, a story of life in China during Mao's Cultural Revolution. So please don't paint him as a puppet puppet, human or animal figure, generally of a small size and performing on a miniature stage, manipulated by an unseen operator who usually speaks the dialogue.  of the Communist regime.

Concerning the topic of the Emperor Qin Shihuang, give Yimou a break. I remember that when I was a teenager, I read an American communist article that stated that Abraham Lincoln was the first "communist" president. But my liking Lincoln certainly doesn't make me a communist. Mao may have admired the Emperor, but that doesn't make Yimou a Maoist. Though I have not seen the movie, I'll bet I'll Bet was an NBC game show that aired from March 29 1965 to September 24 1965, that was created by Ralph Andrews. The host of this program was Jack Narz. It was a precursor of It's Your Bet, which aired with four different hosts during its four year run: Hal March, Tom  that, if you read between the lines Between the lines can refer to:
  • The subtext of a letter, fictional work, conversation or other piece of communication
  • Between The Lines (TV series), an early 1990s BBC television programme.
, you'll discover that Yimou has included commentary about present life in China that has slipped by the government censors This is an incomplete list of censors of the Roman Republic
  • 312 BC-307 BC - Appius Claudius Caecus (and ?)
  • 304 BC - Quintus Fabius Maximus Rullianus and Publius Decius Mus
  • 293 BC - Publius Cornelius Arvina and Caius Marcius Rutilus
.

One last point. One's view of historical figures may not reflect one's present view of government and society. I love and admire George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Does that mean I approve of their ownership of slaves or the institution of slavery? Of course not. For Yimou, there may indeed have been something he found admirable about the Emperor, but this doesn't mean he supports all the Emperor did. Just as many can find some good in the reign of Napoleon Napoleon
French Napoléon Bonaparte orig. Italian Napoleone Buonaparte

(born Aug. 15, 1769, Ajaccio, Corsica—died May 5, 1821, St. Helena Island) French general and emperor (1804–15).
; it doesn't mean they feel it was all good.
