Girls go to Mars to get more candy bars, boys go to Jupiter to get more ... Well, you know the rest. But what if your principal believed something as stupid as a playground rhyme? That's the scene Michelle Selden, 13, found herself in when it was announced that boys and girls would be taught in separate classrooms at Southside Junior High School this year. Under the new plan, girls were to learn "good character" and boys would be taught "heroic" behavior, all while teachers used strategies catering to gender-specific learning styles. But Michelle wasn't buying it. As a girl who likes to do things like scuba dive, fight fires and practice kung fu, Michelle knew that being stereotyped could deprive her of the best possible education. So instead of going to a class with no Y-chromosomes, Michelle took action. Thanks to a lawsuit she brought against the school board with the help of the ACLU, Southside will continue to be co-ed.
