Girl Guides and cookies no more: a couple distress over Girl Guides of Canada.

No parent who holds to Christian teachings on sexual morality would ever allow his or her child to listen to Sue Johansen. Everything she holds is in violation of the Christian faith. "We all have sexual feelings sexual feelings A constellation of psychological sentiments that constitute desire for sexual satisfaction or release of sexual tension ; why deny it? Go ahead and act on them" are the main ideas she presents in her radio shows, her newspaper columns and her presentations. (Editor: she now even writes a column for the Toronto Star The Toronto Star is Canada's highest-circulation newspaper, though its print edition is distributed almost entirely within Ontario. It is owned by Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd., a division of Star Media Group, a subsidiary of Torstar Corporation.  and is frequently seen on television.)  deters Sue Johansen from advocating her "if-it-feels-good-do-it" philosophy. As if that were not bad enough, she also undermines parental rights and responsibilities by ensuring that all teens are informed of the confidentiality by which doctors, pharmacists This is a list of notable pharmacists.

No, no Christian parents would allow their daughter to listen to Sue Johansen, ... but we did, unwittingly, courtesy of Girl Guides of Canada Girl Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada is the national Guiding association of Canada. Guiding in Canada started in 1910 and was among the founding members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in 1928. .

Leadership training

In April of this year our eldest received notification that her application to AGGIE '98 had been approved. AGGIE is a provincially-sponsored leadership training weekend for girls in the Senior Branches of Guides. The girls are from age 15 to 17. The notification included a tentative outline of the weekend's events, and stated that there would be a guest speaker as part of the closing events. What we did not know, but my daughter found out upon her arrival, was that the guest speaker was "sexpert" Sue Johansen.

Ms. Johansen began her talk with her customary "everyone has sexual feelings; it's OK to act on them" diatribe di·a·tribe

A bitter, abusive denunciation.

[Latin diatriba, learned discourse, from Greek diatrib
, and continued from there. No adult present questioned the morality of what she presented; moreover, no adult present questioned why she was there.

But my husband and I raised these questions in a series of letters to both the provincial and national levels of Girl Guides of Canada. Their responses were less than satisfactory.

In response to our concerns over the lack of prior notification, Chief Commissioner Elaine Paterson wrote, "[Isabel Kerr, Provincial Commissioner for Ontario, and I] are both in agreement that the information about a keynote speaker should always be given to the girls well in advance of a conference such as AGGIE so that parents have the time to discuss topics with their daughters."

While we are grateful for the assurance that prior notification will be forthcoming, it is disturbing to note the reasons given. They were certainly not the reasons we brought forth, namely, the right of parents to determine the type of instruction given to their children, whether that instruction is within the school system or through extra-curricular activities such as Guiding.

We also raised the issue of the suitability of Sue Johansen as a guest speaker. "It is incomprehensible," we wrote in one letter, "that Girl Guides of Canada, whose very Guiding Promise includes the words `be true to my faith' would select as a guest speaker a woman whose position on sexual morality is in direct opposition to so many faiths."

Disturbing responses

The responses have not allayed our fears. "I am well aware that Ms. Johansen is controversial, but her information is well received by many teens and their families," came the first reply. Another, in a later letter, asserted, "There are many differing views on that particular subject (sexual morality). Hearing different views on any given topic ... often helps us grow and strengthen our own convictions while acknowledging that not everyone shares our own opinions."

What!? Morality by consensus? That is total relativism relativism

Any view that maintains that the truth or falsity of statements of a certain class depends on the person making the statement or upon his circumstances or society. Historically the most prevalent form of relativism has been See also ethical relativism.
. So much for the Christian principles upon which the Guiding movement was founded. Moreover, it would appear that the Guiding administration fails to recognize that what is presented to the girls in a leadership training weekend is, by rights, something they must learn. Indeed, this was another pretense for Ms. Johansen's appearance. "Knowledge increases understanding, and thus may prevent errors," wrote Fiona Hunter of the provincial office. Knowledge is indeed necessary for making proper choices, but a properly formed conscience is the foremost requirement. And, in truth, Sue Johansen provides neither.

"Does Sue Johansen represent the philosophy and policy of the Girl Guides of Canada?" we questioned in yet another letter.

No reply. The silence is ominous.
