Charismatic Rob only arrived in town last year, but he has quickly become the most popular boy in his Texas high school. Thad, nicknamed "Young," is part of his clique (mathematics) clique - A maximal totally connected subgraph. Given a graph with nodes N, a clique C is a subset of N where every node in C is directly connected to every other node in C (i.e. C is totally connected), and C contains all such nodes (C is maximal). , along with athletic but dumb Coop and macho, handsome Bob, and they all willingly do what Rob says. When Rob decides to exercise his power over his classmates Classmates can refer to either:

 by elevating the class nerd, Simon Glass, to "Joe Popular," just because he can, his posse goes along with his plans. They teach Simon how to dress and how to act, and Young even agrees to break up with the girl he loves so that Simon can invite her to the prom. But Simon Glass has a mind of his own, and while he does win popularity thanks to Rob's scheming, he also ferrets out Rob's terrible family secret, bringing about a shockingly violent climax.

Disturbing and convincing, with witty dialogue and realistic characters, this is a strong first novel.
