Gibson slammed again.

Baltimore -- Mel Gibson's 2003 movie The Passion of the Christ was slammed by critics and academics world-wide. Regular moviegoers, however, turned out by the millions to make it a box-office bonanza. When this tailed off, nine million copies were sold in the first 3 weeks after its release in DVD. On November 7, 2004, Gibson as producer was honoured by the Catholics in Media Associates in Hollywood.

Even at this late date, however, the critics are still on the job. In September 2004, some 140 Christian scholars and leaders working on Jewish-Christian dialogue felt called upon to condemn the film. In November, representatives of the American Catholic bishops, meeting with their colleagues from the National Council of Synagogues, condemned the film as "a modern version of the notorious mediaeval Passion plays which ... over the centuries have triggered riots against the Jews in Europe." In fact, not only has Gibson's film not created riots, it has not caused a single anti-Semitic act despite being shown on five continents. In other words, Gibson's film had overthrown the "scholarly" theories that Passion Plays contribute to anti-Semitism.
