, who composed a pair of Pulitzer Prize-winning operas and founded the Spoleto arts festivals in Italy and the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , died February 1 at a hospital in Monaco. He was 95.

Menotti, born in Cadegliano, Italy, won Pulitzers for a pair of the 20th century's more successful operas: The Consul, and The Saint of Bleecker Street. The Consul also earned him the New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Drama Critics Circle award as the best musical play of the year in 1954.

From Spoleto's stages, dancers such as Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp went on to shape the direction of contemporary dance.

Menotti also wrote music for ballet, orchestra and other productions, as well as the librettos for all his operas. He also directed operas--his own and works of other composers.
