Getting the most mileage from your rental car.


Travel is one of the realities of doing business anywhere, and many companies rely on car rentals to move employees back and forth to conduct business. There are a few questions, beyond the obvious "How much does it cost?" question, that companies should be asking when renting vehicles.

"What that may mean is that you may not be getting the cheapest rate for any given destination, but because you're corporate, the first thing you ask is 'Does my corporation have a corporate policy to support any particular company?"

The reason is that such a policy is a contract between the two companies for the renting company to rent a certain number of cars for a certain amount of mileage MILEAGE. A compensation allowed by law to officers, for their trouble and expenses in travelling on public business.

"Even though there may be a couple of dollars difference between the two (cheapest and corporate) rates, by supporting the program you are probably helping your company in the long run negotiate better and stronger rates," says Tobin.

"I would always ask as a corporate client if they have unlimited miles," she says. "If you're booking through an agency, I would also ask about leisure rates. If you don't have corporate rates, you can always ask for leisure rates. This would be if you were picking (the vehicle) up on a Thursday night and dropping it off on a Saturday, you might qualify for a weekend rate."

For rental companies, how the car is being used is not nearly as important as the fact that it is being used. That is why it never hurts to ask about promotional rates, says Tobin.

Tobin also recommends people booking cars for company trips double-check with the company to find out-whether they are covered by that company's insurance or if they have to purchase additional insurance.
