Getting technical: defining the latest sports technology advances.

Tarek Tomes, as the president of ASN (1) (Autonomous System Number) A unique identifier of an autonomous system on the Internet. Of the 65 thousand ASNs available, more than 30 thousand have been assigned to ISPs and NSPs.  for the past six years, has a pretty good idea of what coaches are seeking in sports-related technology.

That relationship has produced the Practice Manager and XO Illustrator. Created by coaches for coaches, the basketball coaching software is cutting edge in its design and simpliflies both the teaching aspect and the technological use of the product.

"The use of technology allows coaches to organize themselves and gain efficiency," says Tomes, a former professional basketball player in Germany. "Right now, technology is relatively on the bottom end of the proverbial hockey stick. But, whether it's video editing See nonlinear video editing and video editor.  packages or play diagramming packages, as the tools mature they will become easier to use.

"Many of the tools created by great technology people aren't really pertinent for coaches. They are too difficult to use or too time-consuming. They have to be made with an eye toward the basketball problem that the coach is trying to solve, not the technology problem."

From video and digital editing systems to software to scoreboards and video display systems to sound systems, coaches and AD's expect a smooth, glitch A temporary or random hardware malfunction.  Sports Software is making great strides in productivity and performance. Its Ultima Multi-Stream video editing workstation has a new feature called multi-capturing, or quad-capturing, as the company refers to it. The technology allows the user to capture four streams of video simultaneously from one computer.

"You call do four times the work," says Ron Wojcicki, LRS Sports Software's marketing manager. "College video coordinators keep asking, 'How can I get the video and the data faster In the coaches?' Now they can".

LRS's Gamer digital video editing and game analysis system allows the user direct edit from digital and analog cameras, using a firewire cable out of the camera Straight into a hard drive connection.

This allows the user to not only capture the video to a tape, but also capture the video to a hard drive. The hard drive version is a file copy that can be reproduced.

John Barkley, director of marketing and business development for Pinnacle Systems Pinnacle Systems, Inc. is a California-based American manufacturer of digital video hardware and software for the consumer and broadcast markets. It was founded in 1986. In 2002 Pinnacle purchased VOB Computersysteme GmbH (now pinnaclesys.de). , Team Sports makers of the popular SportsEdit digital video editing and analysis tool, knows that coaches are looking for Looking for

ways to help expedite the burden of team preparation.

First, they don't want to deal with videotape anymore. Second, they want a complete set of tools that work together-a nice seamless environment in which to get through their day and complete their game plan.

"They're looking for a greater integration of tools," says Barkley. "They want to do more, better, and faster produce more streams of video in quicker time or speed up the process of getting to digital video."

Barkley used a sports technology analogy that would combine Excel, Power Point, and Word a complete Suite--in order to streamline the tasks of play drawing, game planning, and team meetings.

Barkley estimates that 30% of Pinnacle's customers are tapeless today, meaning once it's on the computer they never go hack to tape. Mow and more high school coaches are making the transition to video editing.

"I think people wig centrally to go digital," says harry Bryant, president of CoachComm Sports Electronics, which has partnered with Pinnacle in the sales of SportsEdit. "More and more are doing so because they want to. But a lot of is because they have to. There's just not enough analog equipment out there.

"If you try and lind a full size VHS (Video Home System) A half-inch, analog videocassette recorder (VCR) format introduced by JVC in 1976 to compete with Sony's Betamax, introduced a year earlier.  camcorder, you won't succeed because basically it doesn't exist. You have to get one of the smaller formats. Schools are looking for that standard to swap tapes. It used to he VHS forever. Now schools are being forced to go digital or go another route."

As an aside. CoachComm has developed the Commando Control RF wireless remote. It uses radio frequency (RF) instead of infrared. Features include a familar button layout, built-in laser pointer A laser pointer is a portable, pen-sized laser designed to be held in the hand, and most commonly used to project a point of light to highlight items of interest during a presentation. , and instant replay on select models.

"With your home remote, if you point it at the TV it works fine," CoachComm's Bryant says. "But if someone walks in front of it and breaks thai infrared beam, it blocks it. All coaching remotes, up until this one, have been wired remotes, This will allow coaches to be mobile."

The beauty of a product such as SportsEdit--which is Windows compatible and runs, the gamut from football and basketball to lacrosse lacrosse (ləkrôs`), ball and goal game usually played outdoors by two teams of 10 players each on a field 60 to 70 yd (54.86 to 64.01 m) wide by 110 yd (100.58 m) long. "You're making cut ups in two and a half hours," Barkley says. "Which is something you really can't do on videotape. It's simple and intuitive."

Sports-Edit was initially designed for an individual coach to do his own work. By the end of the year, several coaches will be able to work and share information simultaneously in what is being dubbed dub 1

SOFTWARE SOLUIONS

Simple and intuitive also applies to ASN's Practice Manager and XO Illustrator.

The Practice Manager software-which comes with 50 pre-loaded drills that will increase to 100 by late fall-allows coaches to organize and plan practices, with the added luxury of printing and analyzing the printouts.

Practice plans are created and displayed on a calendar for easy recall and editing. The unique analysis feature lets coaches review how much time they spend in practice on various drills New drills can he added and organized in any manner for easy organization. The Practice Manager also allows you to organize team rosters coaches, and practice teams.

"Every coach in the world plans his practices," Tarek Tomes says. "Some scribble scribble - To modify a data structure in a random and unintentionally destructive way. "Bletch! Somebody's disk-compactor program went berserk and scribbled on the i-node table." "It was working fine until one of the allocation routines scribbled on low core.  it on a napkin napkin See Sanitary napkin.  and some on index cards. The more advanced coaches used to sort of word process their practices or maybe doing it in Word or Excel None really tied it together, including me to for a lot of years "

The XO Illustrator is a drill and play-book animation and illustration tool. It also comes with numerous drills and plays pre-loaded. Drills or plays can easily be created in several different ways. They can be animated so that the coaches can actually see and show how different plays or drills develop and progress. They can also be printed in a professional manner for scouting reports or for creatting play-books.

"This is a great visual learning tool," says Tarek Tomes. "You can diagram opponent's plays and present them in a scouting report where they visually move. It also comes with plays and drills that are already animated. Coaches will be able to download a certain play and see how it actually operates instead of watching it on a video."

Both products, which run on Windows, sell for $80. Users can try a free demo on ASN's web site, www.hoopsnet.com.

Another novel software idea comes from Vision Ventures, LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

, manufacturer's of scheduleUS Publisher.

The product, which is Windows and Palm OS compatible, is an ideal way for schools and athletic departments to keep the families of student-athletes abreast of games practices, and school-related activities.

Coaches and AD's can credit a calendar of events that can be uploaded onto a school's respective Internet homepage. Revisions and updates are a simple upload on the administrator's end and download on the user's end.

Best of all, there is nothing to print and no server software is required.

THE NEXT WAVE

Coaches have exchanged game tapes for years. What used to be 8mm became VHS. Now, they are exchanging either DVD's or hard drives.

The concept of compressed digital video exchange via the WorldWideWeb is fast approaching. In fact, LRS's Ron Wojcicki predicts the technology will be fully functional in time for the 2004 collegiate football season.

Companies like LRS and L3 are in the final phases of making instantaneous information exchange between a coach in New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
and a coach in California as simple as clicking a mouse.

"The Internet is where every one will eventually go," says Wojcicki. "It's going te be huge. No doubt about it. Video technology changes exponentially."

LRS, which has had discussions with four major college conferences, calls its video exchange technology, GaimX.

The quality of the compressed digital video has improved dramatically. The standard format for playing compressed video compressed video - video compression  on the internet is MPEG-4, the streaming video A one-way video transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as company networks to play video clips and video broadcasts. Computers in home networks stream video to digital media hubs connected to a home theater.  file equivalent of MP3 audio files.

MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  (Moving Pictures Experts Groups (spelling) Moving Pictures Experts Group - Incorrect expansion of MPEG, which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group. ) is a generic means of compactly representing digital video and audio signals for consumer distribution.

"This format gives you good quality video at a much reduced downloadable size," says L3's Larry Cheesman. "The issue there is quality. As compressed video continues to get better, the technology will be a lot more feasible. We've been grappling to get the quality just right so that it can be used acceptably for coaching. We're close."

Security issues, as well as costs, are major concerns. While the fees have yet to be determined, there are two main options for file sharing Copying files from one computer to another. See peer-to-peer network, file sharing protocol and file and printer sharing.  the videos.

Says Ron Wojcicki: "As the technology improves, other schools will adapt to the technology, with all or most on board within three to five years. Then there will be the trickle-down effect This article discusses a marketing phenomenon. For the political term see trickle-down economics.

As an aside, the L3 Digital Video Recruiting Service will officially go nationwide this fall. L3 is working with the National Football Foundation in conjunction with the local chapters to help obtain videos from high school programs. L3 will digitize To convert an image or signal into digital code by scanning, tracing on a graphics tablet or using an analog to digital conversion device. 3D objects can be digitized by a device with a mechanical arm that is moved onto all the corners.  the video and gather player information and offer that as a recruiting service to the schools. SportsWeb allows the coach to stream the video it today or download and take it with him on the road. The process is similar to MP3 music files that can be downloaded onto a portable player. Coaches can now download video and watch it wherever they want.

Furthermore, SportsWeb can now work in conjunction with SportsEdit, providing an affordable solution at the high school and mid-major college level.

Sights and Sounds

Scoreboard technology is pretty much status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war.  several company insiders. The latest innovations--LED and wireless--have been on the market for at least three years.

Companies such as Nevco, Sportable, Everson, and All American continue to produce quality products.

bulbs or lamps to LED scoring digits," says Jerrid Thomas, regional marketing associate for Daktronies, Inc. "A few years ago what you would see at many high school fields was a light bulb system. Now, any new board that we sell has LED technology. "There are so many more benefits to using LED than lamps. Power consumption is a huge factor. Because we sell LED models, we can offer boards in different colors. Electronic message centers are going on more scoreboards than they ever have."

The one place where innovation is thriving is in the video display market. Specifically, the video products area, where company's like Daktronics are beginning to launch virtual pixeling technology, which is another way of getting a better image by allowing pixels to share with one another.

Daktronics' Pro Star and Pro Ad Video Plus displays now offer 4.7 trillion shades of Noun 1. shades of - something that reminds you of someone or something; "aren't there shades of 1948 here?"

color, an increase from 64 billion from its last series.

The company's V-Link 400 controller--a V-link is the interface that sends any signal out to the video board--is now available in an HD (High Definition) version.

Jerrid Thomas says more and more high schools, particularly in Texas, are purchasing higher-end video display systems with their scoreboards. He Noted that a school in Ware County, GA, recently purchased a 34 mm Pro Star system. A very affordable for high schools."

Daktronic Sports Marketing Sport marketing (or "sports marketing" in the US) (1) the specific application of marketing principles and processes to sport products (e.g., teams, leagues, events, etc.) and (2) the the marketing of non-sports products (e.g., cigarettes, beer, long-distance phone service, etc. , a division of Daktronics, Inc., helps with outside funding--mainly through corporate sponsors--so that schools can purchase scoreboards and video display systems.

There's no telling where the next generation of scoreboards and video display systems will go. The sky and the imagination are the limit.

"We'll have to see where our customers drive us," says Jerrid Thomas. "A lot of our customers are unique and have their own special needs. If a certain customer has a good idea and it's something that we can see as profitable for us as well as a better deal for our customers, we'll start to follow that and develop it."

As for sound systems, Anchor Audio offers a complete line of products to meet a school's budget and preference.

The MegaVox PA battery powered system, which boasts 22 watts of power and up to 16 built-in user selectable channels, can handle two wireless microphones. Made for efficient, the model, which operates on a UHF (Ultra High Frequency) The range of electromagnetic frequencies from 300 MHz to 3 GHz. Weighing just 14 pounds, it's portable, as well as waterproof.

"If you need hear a coach from across a football field this will do it," says Debbie Lombard, director of international sales and marketing. The MegaVox can handle crowds of up to 3,000 people.

The portable Liberty Sound System can be used indoors or outdoors, but its 50 watts of power is perfectly designed for a large auditorium filled with as many as 2,000 people. The self-contained unit can accommodate up to three wireless microphones and has line inputs to handle tape, CD or DVD players.

"I think the main thing is that it is much more self-efficient," Debbie Lombard says. "It has evolved. There used to be a time where you had a speaker, mixer, and tuner. Now it's self contained."
