Get your kicks. When soccer star David Beckham arrived in Los Angeles with his wife, Victoria, he brought significant added value to the city's Galaxy team and a new spotlight on his sport. So the Business Journal asks: What do you think about Beckham and his impact on local soccer? Jenni Meyers Marketing Director Los Angeles Marketing Center of AXA Advisors I am not American so soccer has always been big on my radar. I am from Indonesia and I came from a British girl's school so it was very popular in my community. But the Galaxy hasn't really caught on in America. European soccer is more exciting, and I think Beckham has that European style of soccer. He is a very talented, and let's just face it, hot individual and there will be a lot of interest in soccer that wouldn't have been cultivated if not for him and his lovely wife. We're a financial advisory group and we did a philanthropy event for children with the Galaxy Foundation last month. It was before Beckham arrived and we have had a lot of inquiries about the team, and even more since Beckham got here. I will probably go to some games. Dan Berman Managing Partner Wood Smith Henning & Berman LLP I think that soccer in the United States will be immensely more popular for about two games--people are mostly interested in David Beckham and his wife because of his Hollywood appeal. I watch World Cup soccer, and my wife watches a few games a year just to see David Beckham. All of my kids play or have played soccer, but they don't know David Beckham from any other Galaxy player. Soccer will die down after a few games once David Beckham looks like any other common player. Wesley Barrow Panzer Grant Thornton LLP Yes, I do think David Beckham will increase soccer's popularity in the U.S. I watch soccer usually about an hour every week, and my kids played soccer while growing up. I think David Beckham will be an integral part of soccer in the U.S. It's great publicity. Barbara Moore Advisory Board Co-Chairwoman Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services The big picture is that a light will shine on the sport of soccer, the athletes and the rigorous physical exhibition. So I think that David Beckham's impact will largely be positive in the short-term relative to soccer. Whether or not fan interest is sustainable cannot be predicted. I hope that America welcomes the Beckham family with kindness, hospitality and dignity. It's time to quell the frenzy surrounding them. It's time to get down to playing ball. Carolyn Smith Chief Experience Officer Magnus & Co. Inc. The arrival of David Beckham brings a lot of exciting attention to the city. Beckham is a marketing machine and a brand that's been built all across the world. Look at all the people who adore him and all the reporters that follow him around. I think he's going to not only raise the profile of the sport of soccer in LOs Angeles, but also help us continue to grow as a world center and contribute to a thriving economy so long as he stays a part of the Galaxy long enough to extend his influence. Priscilla Jaworkski Project Manager Unusual Suspects Theatre Co. I must say that I do already want to go out and support David Beckham. It's really exciting and I don't know why. Maybe it's because my husband is European. I would love to be out on his first game. In Southern California we are really image-driven, and because he's a really hot looking guy it will bring more intrigue to soccer. Whether it will change over night or not, I don't know. But it's a start. |
