Get ready for more cars. (New Business). The controversial second deck for traffic exiting the capital's Periferico Sur was opened to great fanfare in June, as the mayor's office heralded it as a sign of the administration's commitment to employment, sound environmental policies and a more efficient city. Some environmentalists disagreed with the claim by Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that the project will improve air quality in the capital, saying the extra capacity will only invite more cars to enter the city. The mayor has said he believes traffic flow will improve, thereby minimizing the time cars idle and pollute the air with their noxious fumes. However, critics also describe the plan as another one of the mayor's populist schemes--in the mold of his beautification of Paseo de la Reforma--to increase his own popularity ratings (clocked at well over 80%) by creating jobs for the working class. The project took nine months to complete, further snarling Mexico City's notoriously bad traffic. |
