Organizations such as ours provide young people with a safe place to belong, and a place where they know that they matter. We provide a wholesome environment for having fun and making friends while developing in body and mind. Young athletes develop lifelong skills and values such as goal-setting, responsibility, hard work, organization, discipline and concentration. And by playing on a team, kids develop essential social skills such as cooperation, team building, sportsmanship and a sense of fair play. But now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center. has weighed in with another profound benefit of youth sports: It's a matter of life or death. We're all aware of the causes of this emerging epidemic. Lack of physical education programs in schools, poor eating habits and increased time in front of television, computers and video games See video game console. all help pack the pounds on our young people. Quite simply, they're taking in far more calories than they're burning off. To save lives and millions of dollars in health care costs, we need to shake off the sedentary lifestyle

(Research shows that a variety of physical activity is most effective to keep interest and enjoyment high.) And in the process of having fun together in physical activity, we can experience the pleasure of regular exercise and incorporate it as part of our daily lives.
