AN ARMY recruit is thought to have made history by starting his training at a base where his father is a company sergeant major A Company Sergeant Major (CSM) is the senior non-commissioned soldier of a company in the armies of many Commonwealth countries, responsible for standards and discipline. In combat, his prime responsibility is the supply of ammunition to the company. . Jeff" JD" Whittaker, 16, of Mossley, Lancs, has just arrived for a 17-week course at the barracks in Bassing bourn, Cambs, where his father, also called Jeff, trains recruits.

Company Sergeant Major Whittaker, 44, also of Mossley, believes it is a unique situation. "I've been in the Army since 1977 and I've never heard of this happening before," said CSM CSM - ["CSM - A Distributed Programming Language", S. Zhongxiu et al, IEEE Trans Soft Eng SE-13(4):497-500 (Apr 1987)].  Whittaker. "It's just a coincidence. Nothing more."

CSM Whittaker says his son will be treated like any other soldier. Private Whittaker has been assigned to a company run by a different sergeant major.
