Get a taste of Shanghai, Liverpool residents urged; Expo hosts delegation to visit twinning event.

VISITORS to Liver pool will get a taste of Shanghai Shanghai (shăng`hī`, shäng`hī`), city (1994 est. pop. 12,980,000), in, but independent of, Jiangsu prov., E China, on the Huangpu (Whangpoo) River where it flows into the Chang (Yangtze) estuary.  this weekend at a free event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the twinning relationship between the two cities.

People will be given the chance to experience the food, music and crafts of Liverpool's sister city, including ribbon dancing, Tai Chi Tai Chi Definition

T'ai chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind.
 and Chinese food-tasting.

The city centre event takes place at Metquarter, on Saturday, and Williamson Square Williamson Square is found in the city centre of Liverpool, England. Its most famous landmark is the Liverpool Playhouse. The Square has been renovated several times over the past few decades, with the most recent developments in anticipation of the city's approaching European , on Sunday.

It comes at the same time as a visit from a high-powered delegation of senior gover nment officials from Shanghai, who will be attending Saturday's event with the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Mike Storey.

During the three-day visit, the six-strong delegation will receive an update on Liverpool's plans for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, where Liverpool will be the only UKcity to have a dedicated pavilion.

The delegation will also take in Liverpool's cultural quarter, including a tour of St George's Hall, celebrate the twinning anniversary at Liverpool Town Hall The Liverpool Town Hall is built in a striking style of architecture. Designed by John Wood, the Elder, the first stone of the building was laid in 1749, and the hall was opened in 1754. It is still in use today by Liverpool City Council. , and attend Sunday's Liver pool-Manchester United match at Anfield.

 said: "Our relationship with Shanghai is immensely important and will grow in significance in future years as we seek to strengthen and increase our cultural and trade links, not just with Shanghai but with the whole of China."

The six-month World Expo will run from May 1 to October 31, 2010, and is expected to attract more than 70m visitors.

Mike Taylor, Liverpool Vision's director of investment and enterprise, added: "The visit is especially significant, given our plans for the Expo in Shanghai next year.

"China is predicted to be the world's dominant economy in coming years, so it is critical Liverpool and its academic, cultural and business organisations strengthen existing relationships and forge new ones.

"These relationships will deliver new markets, new investment and new visitors to the city, both in terms of students and leisure visitors, helping us sustain recent economic growth in Liverpool and positioning the city as a favoured business partner over the next decade.

"The Taste Of Shanghai event is a way of raising the profile of the Expo and celebrating our twinning."

This weekend's event runs from 12pm-4pm on both days.
