CASTLES, churches and cathedrals, halls and homes are ready to throw open their doors again.

Welcome again to that time of year which celebrates our architecture and culture by letting us inside well known and loved places to have a good look around.

We can just rummage or try something more risky, like taking a powerboat trip on the Tees, climbing the Transporter Bridge A transporter bridge (also ferry bridge or aerial transfer bridge) is a type of movable bridge that carries a segment of roadway across a river. The gondola is slung from a tall span by wires or a metal frame. , or trying to roller skate in Middlesbrough's Albert Park Albert Park may refer to various places around the world:

All these opportunities and challenges are available on Heritage Open Days which begin on Thursday and run through to a week on Sunday.

More than a million people nationwide took part one way or another last year, making it one of England's biggest and most popular cultural events.

Further fun opportunities this year include free days out at Darlington's Civic Theatre and Head Of Steam Museum, plus Ormesby Hall Ormesby Hall is a predominantly 18th century mansion house built in the Palladian style, situated in Ormesby, near Middlesbrough, in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, in the North East of England. , Durham Cathedral and The Cragg at Whitby.

The white knuckle powerboat ride along the river races around on Thursday and a week today from 1-2pm from Tees Nautical Studies on Middlesbrough's Ferry Road Ferry Road is one of the major roads of Edinburgh, Scotland, and is often referred to as an area in its own right. It runs from the eastern end of Davidson's Mains village in the west, to Leith in the east, passing through Goldenacre on the way.  next to the Transporter Bridge.

Feel the thrill of being exposed to the elements and experience the adrenaline rush as you see the sights of the port of Tees, Britain's second busiest port.

The other boat trip on the MV Northumbria goes from the same place on the same days but is more sedate, giving a chance to really discover daily events in our port.

You have to board the boat by ladder and sensible clothing must be worn. It runs from 1-3pm.

So what else can you try?

The Transporter climb and walk 160ft above the water is available a week tomorrow from 10am-4pm.

You can also view the winding house and visitor centre and take a trip on the gondola.

Feeling silly or just itching to get those skates on again? Then Middlesbrough's Albert Park offers the chance to get rolling Verb 1. get rolling - start to be active; "Get cracking, please!"

Head Of Steam, signposted a mile from Darlington centre on the A167, offers guided tours of the museum and its historic early railway buildings on the hour from 11am-2pm inclusive a week tomorrow and a week on Sunday. The museum is open both days from 10am-4pm.

The 101-year-old Grade II listed Edwardian Civic Theatre in Darlington's Parkgate has tours and talks that will provide access to all areas.

These take place a week today and a week on Sunday at 10am and 2pm, and a week tomorrow at 10am but must be pre-booked so call 01325 486555.

Ormesby Hall, off Church Lane, is an 18th century Palladian mansion with an earlier 16th century hall now linked into one.

It has many attractions and a tea room and is open a week tomorrow from 1.30-5pm with last entry at 4.30.

Durham Cathedral provides a chance to see and explore an exhibition that shows the story of the building and development of the monastery and cathedral church.

See an old part of Whitby and talk to current inhabitants a week on Sunday at The Cragg.

This is a narrow elevated lane along the cliff face below the Khyber Pass and behind Pier Road on the town's west side and from the 17th century it was tightly packed with fishermen's cottages.

Many have gone, but residents of the surviving buildings will be available to talk to visitors. Meet them from 2-4pm, with information at 12, The Cragg.

There is certainly lots for walkers including the Headland History Walks at Hartlepool, which provide a guided tour of The Headland and visit St Hilda's Church, the Masonic Hall, lighthouse and Hough n. 1. Same as Hock, a joint.

Tours last about an hour and go from St Hilda's Church a week tomorrow at 10.30am, noon, 2pm, and 3.30pm with a ghost tour at 6.30pm.

A guided tour around Gisborough Priory lets you rediscover its lost gardens and find out just how much has been done to restore them. Learn also about the ways the gardens have evolved over 300 years.

There are ancient trees, burgeoning wildlife and lots of history and archaeology to interest all.

Join in on Thursday from 1-3pm and a week on Sunday from 11am-3pm.

Sample the Albert Park guided walk in Middlesbrough a week on Sunday and learn about its history, heritage and restoration. Meet at the bandstand from 11am-1pm.

Middlesbrough Heritage Walk from the Central Library takes in some of the main heritage sites in the centre of the town, including the railway station, old clock tower and Town Hall and the Transporter Bridge.

It goes a week on Sunday from 10am-noon.

The Park To Park Heritage Walk from St Cuthbert's Church Saint Cuthbert's Parish Church is situated off Lothian Road in central Edinburgh, well below the level of Princes Street, surrounded by its churchyard. It was throughout the 19th century a fashionable church preferred by the rich burghers of the developing New Town.  on Stokesley Road in Marton reveals a range of history and heritage.

It takes in Bolckow and Vaughan's graves in Marton, a walk through Stewart Park to learn about Captain Cook and then on to Ormesby Hall to discover the history of the Pennyman family. Try it from 2-4pm a week tomorrow.

Barnard Castle was once one of the largest castles in Northern England and a major power base in the many conflicts between the English and Scottish crowns.

Go a week tomorrow from 10am-5pm and enjoy activities for children and families from a fancy dress competition to guided tour, and hands-on archaeology.

Durham Castle is a Grade I listed building, dating from 1072 and was the residence of the Prince Bishops until 1832. It now houses the University College.

Join a tour on Thursday and a week today at 10am, 10.30am, 11am, 11.30 and noon, and a week tomorrow and a week on Sunday at 10am, 10.30am, 11am and 11.30.
