GET BEHIND ME, SATAN The White Stripes (V2, 2005)

The White Stripes are a two-person rock band consisting of guitarist, songwriter, and singer Jack White, and drummer Meg White Megan Martha White (born December 10, 1974 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan) is best known as the drummer and backing vocalist of Detroit rock duo The White Stripes. , St. Rita of the Impossible, and St. Sebastian of Endurance.

You've got to like the guy before you've heard a note. And there's more.

Mainstream audiences first encountered the White Stripes secondhand, through Jack Whites appearance as a wandering minstrel in the Civil War movie Cold Mountain. The next time White was on my radar, he was producing a glorious 2004 comeback album for country matriarch Loretta Lynn Loretta Lynn (born Loretta Webb April 14, 1934) is an American country singer-songwriter and was one of the leading country female vocalists during the 1960s and 1970s and overall is revered as a country icon. . A garage rocker who respects his elders--that is a novelty.

Then I heard "My Doorbell" (the single from Get Behind Me, Satan) on the radio. The song, which is all booming drums, minimalist piano, and pleading vocal, jumps out of a car dashboard with timeless urgency. I wondered where I had heard this before. Soon the answer came: "Instant Karma karma or karman (kär`mə, kär`mən), [Skt.,=action, work, or ritual], basic concept common to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. " by John Lennon Noun 1. Get Behind Me, Satan is a good place for the nondevotee to get on the White Stripes bandwagon. The band's history of abrasive guitar noise and odd time signatures is here mostly abandoned for that Lennonesque piano-based sound and conventionally structured songs with gospel and blues-based melodies. And the Lennon comparison can be extended--for instance, Meg White's drumming is even more loveably primitive than Ringo's. But mostly the kinship is a matter of the naked honesty in Jack White's voice and in those starkly swinging arrangements.
