Gervais comedy up for 5 awards.

RICKY Gervais's hit show Extras has a record five nominations at this year's British Comedy Awards The British Comedy Awards is an annual awards ceremony in the United Kingdom celebrating notable comedians and entertainment performances of the previous year. The awards began in 1990, and are shown live on ITV, in December. .

Last year Gervais's debut sitcom The Office was left in the shade when BBC rival Little Britain cleaned up at the event.

But Gervais has his chance for revenge at the 16th British Comedy Awards next month.

He is up against David Walliams and Matt Lucas for Best TV Actor for the second consecutive year. Extras and Little Britain are up for Best TV with the Catherine Tate Show.

Extras, which featured Hollywood names such as Ben Stiller and Kate Winslet, has two nominations for Ashley Jensen.

The Scottish actress, who plays Maggie, has been shortlisted for Best TV Actress with Catherine Tate and Green Wing's Tamsin Greig, and for Best Newcomer.

The X Factor is up for Best Entertainment Programme, with Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross Friday Night with Jonathan Ross is a chat show presented by Jonathan Ross. It is on the British terrestrial TV channel BBC One and goes out at 10.35pm on Friday nights. It was first shown on November 2, 2001 and is now in its thirteenth series. .

The awards show's executive producer Michael Hurll said: "This year's comedy output on TV is probably the strongest in 16 years of the awards."
