Byline: Mamta03

The Dutch Government has decided that Shell's carbon capture and storage Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an approach to mitigating global warming by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources such as power plants and subsequently storing it instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.  (CCS) project to store carbon dioxide (CO2) underground near the Dutch town of Barendrecht will go ahead in phases despite local opposition.

A small storage test site will be built, followed by a larger site as long as complications do not emerge in the demonstration phase, say Dutch Economy and Environment ministers.

Anglo-Dutch oil major Royal Dutch Shell Royal Dutch Shell plc is a multinational oil company of British and Dutch origins. It is one of the largest private sector energy corporations in the world, and one of the six "supermajors" (vertically integrated private sector oil exploration, natural gas, and petroleum product  is behind the plan to store 10,000 tonnes of CO2 from its Pernis oil refinery in depleted gas fields near Barendrecht. But the plan has encountered heavy local opposition.

Barendrecht council opposed the plan and has said it will try to stop the project in the courts if the government let the storage go ahead. The town is close to the port of Rotterdam The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, located in the city of Rotterdam, South Holland, the Netherlands. From 1962 until 2004 it was the world's busiest port, now overtaken by Asian ports like Singapore and Shanghai. .

"Capture and storage of CO2 is a necessary transition technology to limit damage to the environment," say ministers Maria van der Hoeven and Jacqueline Cramer in a statement.

The Dutch government will also provide financial support for a plan by Germany's E.ON and Belgium's Elektrabel for offshore CO2 storage, according to the ministers. The Dutch government has previously stated its intention to bury up to 30 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
