Georgia's wireless school project. (News connection: up-to-date and usable education information from schools, government, business, research and professional organizations).Georgia has become the latest state to test the merit of wireless laptop computing in schools. As part of a new pilot program, the state will give laptops to all teachers and students at eight selected schools. The Georgia Wireless Classroom Project, launched this fall, will soon have the students working in school and at home, on wireless laptops that will hold their notes and interactive lessons. The state expects to give a total of 5,000 laptops to the participants in this pilot program. The Georgia Technology Authority is funding the wireless classroom project with a $10 mil lion grant raised through lottery funds. Gov. Roy Barnes Roy Eugene Barnes (born March 11 1948) was the governor of the U.S. state of Georgia from January 1999 until January 2003. He is a member of the United States Democratic Party. Barnes was born in Mableton, now a suburb just west of Atlanta. visited the Rossville (Ga.) Middle School in October to give the program a high-profile kick-off. It was there that each student and teacher received an Apple iBook. Apple was the chosen vendor here because the school already had a relationship with the company. At the seven other schools, students and teachers were given Gateway computers. AT&T is the ISP (1) See in-system programmable. E-learning company NetSchools, based in Atlanta, is coordinating the project and supplying the new networks with its NetOrion program to allow students, teachers and parents to access materials, assignments, grades and e-mail. Barnes has a bottom-line view of the project's outcome: For it to be a success, student performance must improve and test scores must go up. "Education has to change for us to be competitive," he insists, adding that technology is a vital component to the plan. While Barnes is giving his full endorsement, the state's educators have the former governor, Zell Miller Zell Bryan Miller (born February 24, 1932) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Georgia. Elected as a Democrat, Miller served as Mayor of Young Harris, Georgia, state representative, Lieutenant Governor from 1975 to 1990, Governor of Georgia from 1991 to 1999, and as , to thank for the program. In the early 1990s, Miller not only set up the state lottery A game of chance operated by a state government. Although the Georgia Wireless Classroom Project is only a few months old, administrators already are encouraged. During the month the laptops were issued to the students, attendance was at 96 percent. But getting the kids to show up and get excited about the program is a simple first step. It is getting them engaged in a new way of learning that will be the challenge, she acknowledges. Through e-learning projects, Jacobs hopes to keep enthusiasm high while raising reading comprehension Reading comprehension can be defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text. Parks Middle School in Atlanta, Principal Michael Sims Michael Sims (February 17, 1958 –) is a noted American nonfiction writer, author most recently of Apollo’s Fire: A Day on Earth in Nature and Imagination (Viking, 2007). observes that students are constantly using their laptops, even during lunch break in the cafeteria. This was several days after they were issued. Sims knows laptops might be used for more than just schoolwork, still he wants to encourage inquisitiveness in·quis·i·tive adj. 1. "I saw one student looking at a site with either the Backstreet backstreet Noun a street in a town far from the main roads Adjective denoting secret or illegal activities: a backstreet abortion backstreet n Boys or 'N Sync," he admits. This is all right, he concedes, because reading Web sites--even pop music sites--encourages reading. The laptops issued do have filtering software so students can't access inappropriate material, Sims adds. Educators demanded that parents get on board with the project in the early stages. At Henderson Middle School, students could not take their laptops home until parents came in for orientation and training. Attendance was not a problem. On the first night of training, 1,000 parents came, along with other family members. At Parks Middle School, several of the parents have asked for additional training sessions. "They want to learn more for themselves and to work better with their children," says Sims. Jean Marie Jean Marie may refer to:
